Latvians generally support banning use of AI in pre-election campaigning

More than half of the Latvian population, or 63%, support a crackdown on the use of bots, deep-faking or other automated manipulation, banning it during the pre-election campaign period, according to an opinion poll conducted by SIA "Rait Custom Research Baltic" and commissioned by the State Chancellery, LETA reports.

60% say that the use of automated manipulation should be punished.

About half, or 51%, of respondents support the proposal that pre-election discussions and debates in the media should be subject to the same rules as pre-election campaigning, according to the survey.

Less than half of the population supports strengthening the Latvian language during election campaigns and debates, according to the survey. Only 46% of respondents support pre-election campaigning in Latvian only, as well as pre-election discussions in the public media only in Latvian, while only 44% support pre-election discussions in Latvian only in commercial media.

Unsurprisingly, there is a sharp difference in support for strengthening the Latvian language during pre-election campaigning and discussions between people with Latvian and Russian-speaking families - only 14% of people with Russian-speaking families support these proposals, while around 65% of people with Latvian-speaking families support them.

The survey was carried out in June this year among 1005 respondents - permanent residents of Latvia aged between 18 and 75.
