Intervija ar Saeimas priekšsēdētāju Daigu Mieriņu

Coalition party ZZS says it has confidence in Transport Minister

The Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS), which is part of the government, trusts Transport Minister Kaspars Briškens (Progressives), Saeima Chairperson Daiga Mieriņa (ZZS) said on the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama" on September 5.

It has already been reported that Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) would assess Transport Minister Briškens' suitability for the post on the basis of how he handles communication on the proposed IPO of national airline "airBaltic" and the railway project "Rail Baltica" – both of which are currently political hot potatoes.

Mieriņa said that ZZS has confidence in the Transport Minister.

"The stability of the government and the stability of the coalition always depends on how the partners are able to talk to each other and deal with very important issues. And often these are difficult issues and also challenges. (...) Clearly, what is happening now with the Transport Minister and all the important issues is a challenge for the government. We will see how the government will deal with it and address these issues," Mieriņa said.

The Speaker of the Saeima also pointed out that it was up to the Prime Minister to evaluate the work of the Transport Minister.

"After all, she is responsible for the ministers, for the work as a whole, for the team as a whole. A lot depends on her to make sure that the team works well and that we solve these difficult issues together," Mieriņa said.

Nevertheless, the expression of confidence if likely to do little to reduce the pressure of Briškens as the history of politics, like the history of football management, is littered with expressions of confidence that are followed soon after by something rather contrary.
