Private jet use should be clearly regulated, says State Chancellery head

Special flights should not be used by government officials if there are no procedures and criteria in place, Raivis Kronbergs, the new director of the State Chancellery, said in an interview with newswire LETA September 5.

He said that the situation with the demotion of the previous Chancellery Director Jānis Citskovskis in connection with the scandal of the airline tickets of the former Prime Minister Krišjānis Karinis (New Unity) has had a very emotional, financial and "empathetic impact on the staff in some respects".

Kronbergs said that the Chancellery is currently tasked with drafting a normative on what these flights are and which group would need them. These regulations would soon be "circulated" to the ministries and there would be a public consultation.

If such an external regulation is adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers, it will also be necessary to have internal regulations for each specific institution, on who organises these trips, who requests, who controls, who evaluates, analyses and so on. "But today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, as long as there is no such regulation, they cannot be used," Kronbergs said.
