PM Kariņš: Coalition needs quicker action on social issues

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) would like more coalition action on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention and the legal framework for same-sex couples, Kariņš said after the coalition meeting on May 15.

Kariņš, following the meeting of the Government Cooperation Council on Monday, May 15, stressed that he would like to address a number of important issues more quickly. One of them is about listing state capital companies on the stock exchange, for which the government will hear a report from the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday, May 16. The Prime Minister acknowledged that this issue has not budged for years, and so far the resistance has been directly from “political circles.” At the moment, however, experts and economists seem to support this idea.

Kariņš would also like the coalition to implement the reforms of the hospital and school network more rapidly. On these two issues, there will be an emergency session of the government at the end of May.

There are a couple of questions that the coalition has failed to agree on. “There has not yet been a reasonable discussion about demography and the availability of labor. And another issue in which there was no consensus in forming the government was the social issue – these are the challenges of violence, the Istanbul Convention […], even further, the Constitutional Court's decision on civil union regulation,” explained Kariņš.

Kariņš said he was confident that a civil union or cohabitation regulation would benefit the general public. The civil union law has been viewed several times by the Saeima, never gaining support.
