Given that both the deputy chairwoman Ilze Vītola (Latvian Farmers' Union) and the former chairman of the Ozolnieki District Council Andris Ozoliņš (Latvian Green Party) received identical support in the first round, the second round of voting was also held for both candidates.
In the second round, six votes were cast for Vītols and eight for Ozoliņš.
Consequently, the President of the Council was not elected, and a third round of voting was held, in which only Ozoliņš' candidacy was put to the vote. However, he again received the support of only eight colleagues, while 11 were against.
As already reported, this was the second attempt to elect a new President of the Regional Council.
The Jelgava Regional Council has been without a chair for more than four months after Madars Lasmanis resigned on April 3.
