Ainārs was the only mayoral candidate nominated.
12 voted in favor and one against. Two ballot papers were invalid.
This was the third time that Jelgava Municipal Council tried to elect a new mayor after the resignation of the then-mayor Madars Lasmanis in April this year due to an ambiguous video scandal. Two previous attempts to elect a new mayor failed, and the council worked for several months without a chairman.
September 20 was the last day by which the council had to elect a chairperson or provide an explanation for not electing a chairperson, as requested by the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development, otherwise, the council would be considered dissolved.
Ainārs is expected to hold the post of chairman for 9 months, until the municipal elections next summer.
