Previously, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) said that she supported the idea of decriminalizing drug use among young people. The Progressives Party, which is represented in the government, also supports the idea.
The Ministry of Health (VM) has already accepted a proposal by the Ministry of Justice (TM) that young people should no longer be criminalized for drug use. The VM will submit it, together with other proposals, to the parliamentary committee in the autumn.
ZZS believes that the call to decriminalize drug use is unjustified. Instead, the party calls on the responsible institutions to focus more actively on preventive measures against drug use.
Andrejs Vilks, ZZS MP and member of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, Home Affairs and Prevention of Corruption, considers the call to decriminalize drug use as insufficiently justified.
"The call sounds populist. It is much more important that the existing legal framework and the established plans are consistently enforced and that new opportunities are not opened up for youth drug use, more addictive behavior and more profit for dealers," said Vilks.
