The abolishing or amendment to the law has been tasked to the State Chancellery by the government and the Ministries of Health and Justice.
The Covid-19 pandemic has not been canceled altogether but the global Covid-related health emergency has been lifted by the World Health Organization (WHO). Covid illness and mortality continue.
In the past 14 days, ten people have died from coronavirus and approximately five laboratory-confirmed cases have been recorded daily, according to data from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). Also, wastewater monitoring in Latvia is still ongoing and the presence of the virus is detected.
“There are currently various sub-types of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. And we know that virus mutations will continue. As soon as the new sub-line appears, it causes an increase in morbidity, which is about two-three-month intervals,” Larisa Savrasova, head of the SPKC's Infection Disease Monitoring and Immunization Division, said.
According to the SPKC representative, there is a possibility that a new type of Omicron could reach Latvia in the autumn and cause an increased illness. The fact that the virus would become seasonal in the same way as influenza has been predicted earlier.
