PM Kariņš: Latvia must 'get rid of' army food supply contract

Latvia must find a way to get rid of the procurement agreement for centralized food supply for the National Armed Forces (NBS), Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (New Unity) said on Latvian Television Wednesday, March 29, morning.

The PM has already asked the Ministry of Defense to assess the possibility of breaking the contract, which is still in force.

“It is a terrible mess that has happened. What I find hard to understand is how it can be that this company, winning completely out of all frames, continues to service the army.”

“Break the contract, then look at the consequences. [..] The times when fraudsters ran everything are long gone. They are now getting caught every step of the way. Let's pump up our muscles and push them out of the system,” the Prime Minister said.

According to the Prime Minister, state-side action should be more aggressive in the termination of the agreement. "Why do those who violate the law continue to benefit at the expense of the public?" asked Kariņš.

As reported, the Defense Ministry has launched an official probe into a EUR 220 million food procurement tender for the National Armed Forces. The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has initiated a criminal case.
