Beauty association plans to request Health Minister's resignation

The Latvian Association of Cosmeticians and Cosmetologists (LKKA) could decide to request the resignation of the Minister for Health, Daniels Pavļuts, LKKA said February 22.

LKKA said that at last week's government meeting, the Minister for Health was the only minister who objected to the resumption of the provision of beauty services, despite the measures developed by the Ministry of Economy (EM) for the safe provision of services.

In a statement to the media, the chair of the Association Renāte Reinsone said: "If the Minister for Health is unable to understand and defend his sector, then we do not see any other option than to decide on expression of distrust in the Minister. We have a dialogue with all the participating ministries, with the exception of the Ministry of Health, under the authority of which we are, as medical practitioners with appropriate education and qualifications. The Minister of Health's remarks are cynical, (..) there is also no desire to listen to and understand the cosmetologists and beauty professionals as contributors to public health."

The organization considers that the government's decisions point to strengthening the lobbying of major medical centers at a time when 9,000 registered beauty service providers face a ban on working and legally earning a living.

LKKA noted that the association's goal was not to get any punishment. The organization considers that national authorities should promote business-friendly conditions and ensure the freedom of fair competition for all operators. “We are in favor of reasonable and proportionate decisions,” said Reinsone.

Restrictions on the beauty sector were imposed as from 9 November 2020 by announcing the state of emergency. The government's decision to allow hairdressers and manicure and pedicure specialists to resume work was taken by the beauty industry with mixed feelings. In the hairdressers' salons, phones are constantly ringing and a long waiting list has already been created. However, cosmeticians and other specialists believe they are humiliated and will certainly bring matters to court.
