The For! party has chosen head of the party in the Saeima, Daniels Pavļuts, as its nominee for the position of Health Minister of Latvia, current Health Minister Ilze Viņķele told Latvian Television January 6.

On Thursday, the party and its allied party within Development/For! will meet with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš to agree on further collaboration in the government.

Ilze Viņķele said that Pavļuts has been chosen for the position because of his crisis management skills. President Egils Levits expressed his support for the candidate.

However, Latvian Health and Social Care Workers Union (LVSADA) chair Valdis Keris said he did not think Pavļuts was the right candidate. He said Pavļuts had no experience in the health care sector and the current situation demands quick and professional action.

Current Health Minister Ilze Viņķele has been requested to resign by PM Kariņš.
