At a press conference on Monday, VARAM reported on the action plans submitted by local governments regarding the dismantling of Soviet and Nazi-glorifying objects in the territory of Latvia. All municipalities, except Daugavpils city, submitted plans.
The Ministry shall request immediate action in order to ensure that the local government will comply with the requirements of the Law.
If the Chairman of Daugavpils City Council and the City Council do not immediately stop inaction in the performance of the duties specified in the Law, in accordance with the Law On Local Governments, the Ministry will assess the responsibility of the Chairperson of the Council and the City Council for the failure to comply with the law and the duties specified therein.
In particular, the Law stipulates that the Saeima may dismiss the City Council if it, inter alia, repeatedly fails to comply with or violates laws. The same applies to the chair of the city council.
The Ministry has requested to submit, within 20 days, a schedule for the dismantling of the memorials in Daugavpils.
