Former minister Gundars Bērziņš dies aged 63

Politician and former finance and health minister Gundars Bērziņš passed away on Sunday, January 8 at the age of 63, according to the LETA newswire, citing social media posts by the deceased's colleagues.

Bērziņš was born on September 26, 1959 in Jēkabpils district. In 1983, he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering of Rīga Polytechnic Institute.

Bērziņš was a member of the 5th Saeima from the Latvian Farmers' Union. He participated in the creation of the People's Party, and was a member of the 7th Saeima and later Minister of Finance from May 2000 until November 2002, while in the 8th Saeima he was the chairman of the Budget and Finance Commission. In October 2006, Bērziņš was also elected to the 9th Saeima.

He was appointed as the Minister of Health on December 2, 2004 and resigned in January 2007 for health reasons.
