Partiju reitingi: līderpozīcijas saglabā "Jaunā Vienotība"

Latest party ratings show New Unity retains top spot

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The latest political party ratings prepared by the SKDS pollster for Latvian Television show the New Unity (Jaunā Vienotība) party of Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš retaining top spot, but some intense jostling for position behind it.

"If Saeima elections were held tomorrow, which political party or association would you vote for?" 1,792 voters were asked in January. To this question, 12.7% answered that New Unity would get their vote – a figure 0.7 percentage points higher than the previous month.

The Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS) retains second place and the Progressives solidify their third-place standing. Both are opposition parties, and both have shed 0.8 percentage points compared to the previous month.

The United List (AS) political grouping leapfrogs coalition partner the National Alliance (NA) to claim fourth and fifth spots with 6.7% and 6.6% support respectively.

Two populist oppostion parties are the only other politica forces to find more than 5% support among the electorate. For Stability! (S!) is in sixth spot with 5.3%, while Latvia In First Place (LPV) finds itself in seventh place with 5.2%.

Former political big-hitter Harmony (Saskaņa) remains stuck in the doldrums on 3.2% and even lower down on the critical list is the conservatives (K) with just 1.7% support. Both parties have been wracked by defections and desertions in the last couple of months and look like their races may have been run.

As usual, the number of people saying they are either undecided or uninterested in the political process is very high as last October's elections fade from memory. 21.7% of respondents say they would not know for whom to vote, while another 11.9% say they wouldn't bother voting at all. The combined figure of roughly 40% of the electorate is consistent with the trend of recent years.
