Latvia's government on Tuesday approved a 50,000 euro donation to help the civilian population in the Gaza strip where the Israeli Defense Force and Hamas fighters are locked in a deadly confrontation.

As expected the cabinet of ministers approved the donation, which comes from contingency funds provided by the budget, at its Tuesday sitting.

In a statement the Latvian Foreign Ministry said: "In light of the escalation in the Gaza Strip, Latvia will provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip by making a 50 000 euro payment to the The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) fund."

The statement also repeated a call by the government for the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority "to take all necessary measures to prevent a further escalation of violence, as well as further destabilization in the region."
