Latvia may be up for diverse new coalition, says politics expert

Take note – story published 5 years ago

The makeup of the 13th Saeima may be fragmented, with a motley coalition, said political scientist Ivars Ījabs appearing on Latvian Radio August 6.

August 6 is the last day when the parties can submit their election tickets.

An expected 17 parties submitting their candidates for MPs. "It means that the bear's skin will have to be divided in many parts," he said.

He added, however, that until the 2010 Saeima election there were even more parties competing in the election.

Ījabs also thinks the next coalition could be quite diverse. "Whoever becomes the Prime Minister will have their hair turn gray from making a government out of a fragmented Saeima like this," said Ījabs.

Nevertheless he said that things are bound to change, and that there's quite a lot of time left until the election, with intense political campaigning still expected in the months to come.

The 13th Saeima election takes place October 6.
