Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis has been assigned the job of preparing the political arguments explaining why “we aren’t ready to agree to working out these quotas,” she said.
The premier said Latvia supports the principle of solidarity in other areas, for instance strengthening border patrols or providing medical assistance, but not on the mandating of quotas.
As reported, the National Alliance (NA) faction of the ruling coalition requested the meeting to consider the issue and adopt a united position against the application of refugee quotas to Latvia. Opposition parties in Saeima have chimed in their objections to the proposed idea, as well.
The NA urged state officials and government representatives to “act responsibly regarding this sensitive national security issue and in talks with foreign partners to express this position, which has the support of the majority in Latvian society.”
