Latvian PM Kariņš: restrictions should not be priority now

The Ministry of Health 'stop tugging at the society' with restrictions and only emphasize vaccination, masks and testing, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš said on Latvian Television January 26.

Kariņš referred to WHO's forecast that 60% of Europeans will get Covid-19 in this wave. “If that is the case, the real and right protection is vaccination, which is where the emphasis should be placed, not restrictions,” he said.

“We need to stop tugging at society, we have to carry one simple message – let's get vaccinated, wear masks and get tested. That's how people can protect themselves well,” Kariņš said.

“I'm really encouraging – relax. Get a third shot – it's the main thing that everyone can do. Or get the first shot. Wear masks. And keep on living peacefully because we can't stop all life. This is the third year of the pandemic. It seems to me that we have learned that the main responsibility must be borne by everyone individually,” the Prime Minister said.

He said that Latvia is not like China where central authority forces to sit at home for months. "We don't do it and will not do it," said Kariņš.
