In protest against the plans to remove the Soviet monuments in Latvia, the Latvian Russian Union plans to organize a protest march in Rīga from Uzvaras park to the Freedom Monument on May 28, LETA reported.

As reported earlier by LSM, a rally "Getting Rid of Soviet Heritage" with a march from the Freedom Monument to the Soviet memorial in Uzvaras park took place May 20, attracting thousands of participants.

The Latvian Russian Union's walk is scheduled from Uzvaras park to the Freedom Monument. The use of sound-enhancing equipment during the rally is intended. The organizers have indicated that up to 350 people will participate.

The aim of the event is to express a protest against the actions of the ruling parties of Latvia, by 'destroying monuments,  prohibiting the use of traditions and the mother language of minorities in education'.

As explained to LETA by Riga City Council, the application is currently being examined and consultations are being held with law enforcement authorities.
