Latvian State Forests loses its council

Take note – story published 1 year ago

One of the largest state companies – Latvian State Forests (Latvijas Valsts meži, LVM), had four people on its council just days ago. Now, the whole council, including its chairman, have handed in their resignations, Latvian Television reported March 2.

The resignation was first submitted by council member Kaspars Ozoliņš on February 21. In a public statement, Ozoliņš explained he was not able to do his duties as an independent member of the council in the company in the future.

This week, resignations were also written by Aivars Tauriņš and Rinalds Muciņš.

Finally, on Thursday, March 2, Council Chairman Edmunds Beļskis also submitted his resignation. On Wednesday, explaining the possible decisions of the other members of the council to leave the company, he was still ready to continue.

"The most direct explanation could be obtained from the members of the Council concerned. But at the level of my feelings, it is that the council members concerned want to focus on their direct business, where they are in direct operational management," said Beļskis on Wednesday.

On the other hand, Rinalds Muciņš told LTV that a certain phase of work had been done, the results of the last year had been confirmed, and this year's budget had been approved, but that he had decided to step down because there was a “focus on personalities rather than results”.

Muciņš, who is also chairman of Stradiņš Hospital's board of directors, denied that the resignation was related to the fact that council members had other basic jobs. “I do not see this relationship, these are different positions and different investments, and the hospital has not suffered from it, duties are being carried out,” Muciņš said.

No further comments were given at this time about the reasons and the future of LVM's leadership. Last year, though, there was a debate on whether the then-elected board of LVM had been selected in accordance with fair governance principles due to the past histories of the board members.
