Latvia's richest - and most indebted - mayors revealed

Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs, Liepaja Mayor Uldis Sesks, and the Baldone Region Council Chairman Andrejs Pozarnovs are the highest-paid municipal leaders in Latvia, according to the State Revenue Service's data based on municipal leaders' declarations for 2016.

Lembergs earned EUR 553,411 last year, Sesks made EUR 205,406, while Pozarnovs' annual salary in 2016 amounted to EUR 125,329. Further down the list are Ilukste Region Council Chairman Stefans Razna (Greens/Farmers) who earned EUR 105,970 last year, and Vainode Region Council Chairman Visvaldis Jansons (For Development of Vainode Region) - EUR 90,136.

Lembergs,a controversial and figure who has been on trial charged with large scale graft for nearly a decade, also posted the largest debt liabilities last year - the total amount of Lembergs' debts is EUR 15.29 million. At one time in the past, Lembergs explained that he owed these debts not to a bank or a credit institution, but to his children.

Ozolnieki Region Council Chairman Dainis Liepins' debt liabilities amounted to EUR 391,000 last year, Adazi Region Council Chairman Maris Sprindzuks' debts stood at EUR 304,534, Ogre Region Council Chairman Egils Helmanis declared debts worth USD 350,000 (EUR 297,492), and Grobina Region Council Chairman Aivars Priedols owes EUR 178,000.
