Take note – story published 3 years ago

On January 21, the Central Election Commission (CVK) announced that local government council elections would take place on June 5 this year.

The municipal elections will be held in six cities and 35 counties. However, elections in Riga municipality will not take place this year because the City Council was elected in emergency elections last year and will continue to work until the 2025 elections.

The CVK intends to set the number of deputies to be elected to municipal councils on 26 January. The number of deputies to be elected to the City Council shall be determined according to the number of inhabitants.

In municipal elections, voters will be able to vote in any polling station in their constituency. For the first time, an electronic online voter register will be used.

This year, for the first time, voters with voting rights in municipal elections will be able to apply for a vote by mail from abroad. They will have to apply in advance - from March 27 to April 24 through the portal “www.latvija.lv”, the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, the embassies or representations of the Republic of Latvia, the CVK or using the official electronic address.

More information about local government elections is found on the CVK website.
