Long-time Jelgava region council chairman deposed

Take note – story published 2 years ago

The deputies of Jelgava County Council opted for a fresh start to 2022 January 5 by dismissing the long-time chairman of the council Ziedonis Caune (Latvian Farmers' Union).

Eleven members of the council voted to release Caune from the council chairmanship. Four councilors were against, and three did not vote.

Political shifts in the new Jelgava region have been ongoing since last year's regional government reforms saw it merged with Ozolnieki region. In addition, in December, the minister responsible for the supervision of local government requested that Caune provide explanations regarding the non-compliance of council work with various rules and regulations.

A month ago LTV's De Facto investigative journalism show predicted that Caune would soon be shown the door as dissatisfaction grew among council members.

Caune has held the position of the Chairman of Jelgava County Council since the middle of 2009 and was a council deputy before that.

Jelgava is Latvia's fourth-largest city with a population of just over 60,000, and now sits at the center of the expanded region bearing its name, but the municipal administrations of the city and the region are separate.
