The coalition is putting forward Kristīne Bērziņa, the information department head of the Central Election Commission, for the commission’s chairperson.

Bērziņa confirmed that she has agreed to run for the position.

She told LETA that her first priority is to ensure the quality of the upcoming European Parliament elections. As the preparation for the elections is nearing the end, it would be difficult for someone who has not been involved in it to take all things over.

Also, Bērziņa would like to work on other issues, such as online registration of voters at polling stations that would eliminate stamps in passports. Bērziņa also wants to increase wages for members of election commissions, ensure more convenient voting for people who are abroad on the election day.

As reported, lawmakers have to submit their candidates for the Central Election Commission’s head by today.

Several coalition parties have said that they want the Central Election Commission's long-time chairman Arnis Cimdars replaced "to bring in new blood" in the commission.
