Major party could lose state funding over campaign violations

Riga Vidzeme District Court has turned down a complaint filed by the Unity party, contesting the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) decision that the party had violated election campaign funding rules during the last Saeima elections.

The court has upheld the KNAB decision, Vidzeme District Court's spokeswoman Oksana Hvostova told LETA Wednesday.

The Corruption Prevention Bureau last year concluded that Unity had not reported all of its election campaign costs, namely, several Unity newcomers from regional parties and the Reform Party had organized individual campaigns to gain voters' support.

Unity was not the only party whose election campaign costs did not comply with the law - the Corruption Prevention Bureau also fined Harmony, the Union of Greens and Farmers and other parties, but Unity had to pay the largest fine, EUR 4,300.

If the KNAB decision comes into force, Unity could lose funding from the state.
