On Monday, December 6, the State Police detained the Saeima deputy Aldis Gobzems in an unauthorized gathering in Tukums, LETA reported. Gobzems was later released.

The Public Relations Department of the State Police announced that on Monday an unauthorized meeting was spotted in Tukums, in violation of the Law on Meetings, Processions, and Pickets.

At the site of the event, the police officers asked the organizer to stop the activities immediately but they refused to do so. Accordingly, the person was detained and taken to the police station. The police indicated that breaches of epidemiological safety rules were identified at the site, namely by gathering more than 20 people outdoors.

After the maximum four-hour detention, Gobzems was released. “I have no claims. I haven't signed anything. I don't know why I was detained at all,” Gobzems told Latvian Television.

He also expressed his determination to request the resignation of Interior Minister Marija Golubeva, the State Police management and the State Police's Tukums station management.

The State Police said that two administrative infringement proceedings were initiated against the meeting organizer: one regarding non-compliance with officials' requirements and the other for violations of the Law on Meetings, Processions and Pickets.

A number of administrative infringement proceedings have also been initiated against other participants in the unauthorized meeting and the responsibility of the other members of the meeting will also be assessed.

The livestream on social networks shows that Gobzems is placed in a police car handcuffed. Gobzems talked actively with the police and asked the law enforcement officials to show their service license.
