Ministers insist humanitarian help being provided at Belarus border

As international attention continues to focus on the tense situation at the borders between Latvia and Belarus and Lithuania and Belarus, several Latvian government ministers have taken to social media to insist that humanitarian assistance is being provided to vulnerable border crossers. But another minister has criticized a German media report of the situation as biased.

Interior Minister Marija Golubeva (Development/For!), who has responsibility for the Border Guard, tweeted in English and was retweeted by Health Minister and party colleague Daniels Pavļuts, with the pair insisting humanitarian and medical aid was being provided.

The responses came in English and in response to a report from the German Deutsche Welle media outlet which described a family stuck on the border between Latvia and Belarus.

However, a third member of the liberal-aligned Development/For! political grouping, Defense Minister Artis Pabriks, accused Deutsche Welle of bias in its reporting.
