New party gets new name

Take note – story published 7 years ago

The new political party founded by showboating independent MP Artuss Kaimins will be renamed as 'KPV.LV' just weeks after it was formed, Kaimins told the LETA news service Wednesday.

It was planned that the party would be called KPV, an abbreviation of Kam Pieder Valsts? (Who Owns The State?), but it turned out that there was a legal problem with registration of the party, as a limited liability company with the same name had already been registered in Latvia.

The documents about the name change have been submitted to the Latvian Enterprise Register, and the party is waiting for a reply from the Register.

The number of members of the new party has reached 600, Kaimins said.

The foundation meeting of the new party took place on May 3 this year, and Kaimins was elected as the party leader.

Kaimins was elected to the Latvian parliament from the ticket of the Latvian Association of Regions (LRA) in the 2014 general elections but quit the LRA faction in December 2015 over differences with the faction’s leaders and became an independent MP.

Before that he was an actor and host of a popular online videocast called 'The dog house' - which continues - in which he lambasts politicians and other prominent figures.

However his rebellious man of the people credentials took a knock when he was filmed brawling and bellowing in an upscale Riga restaurant.

Nevertheless he has a loyal following, particularly among young Latvians in Ireland and the UK.
