Senior officials offered their thoughts on the occasion of Latvia's Independence Day November 18.

In a brief video clip ahead of a longer speech later in the day, President Egils Levits said:

"United thoughts and deeds, the greatest goals can be achieved. 103 years ago, the dream of Latvia was fulfilled by 39 members of the People's Council. Today, we are all building a modern, democratic, national state."

Speaking to LTV Thursday morning the president said he was confident current challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic and the crisis at the border with Belarus would be overcome.

"If we look at history - we have been strong, we are strong today and we will be strong in the future," he stated.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš said: "Latvia's strength lies in our mighty oaks, clear rivers, and sonorous songs, but above all - in people. Thank you to everyone who has created and is shaping Latvia with their thoughts, actions, and faith in it! May the sun shine on Latvia!"
