Putnis to stand down as head of the Progressives

Roberts Putnis, the head of the social democratic Progressives party, is to step down following an unexpectedly bad performance at the European elections.

Putnis confirmed he is to step down in Facebook post. Putnis said he did all he could to achieve results at the Saeima and European elections. "It wasn't successful, and it's my responsibility. Even though we have been able to influence the political agenda, every party's fortunes or the lack thereof are indicated by the people's mandate," he wrote.

He said that the party faces a scorched way through the desert until the 2021 municipal elections. "To walk this way, the organization has to regroup. The management team has to have people who set goals and assume political responsibility to reach them," he said.

The party, which lists a mixture of green and traditional social democrat policies in its agenda, received 2.9% of the vote in the European Parliamentary elections.

The party was nevertheless able to beat the 2% mark in the previous parliamentary elections, meaning it qualifies for state funding.
