Rīga mayor Turlais voted out after just three weeks

Take note – story published 4 years ago

Just three weeks after he was elected following the suspension of predecessor Nils Ušakovs, Rīga mayor Dainis Turlais (Honor to Serve Rīga party, GKR) was ousted in a vote of no confidence by city council members June 20.

The vote to decide Turlais' future was close with 31 councillors expressing no confidence and 29 backing him.

The long-standing Chairman of the Corruption Prevention Committee of the Riga City Council, Turlais  was elected to the Mayor of Riga on May 30 after Ušakovs was elected to the European Parliament. Prior to that he was suspended in any case. Meanwhile several corruption scandals involving council-owned entities continue to unfold.

But Turlais' election coincided with internecine warfare within the Harmony political party that is in alliance with GKR which has resulted in the collapse of the formerly controlling coalition.
