“The problem, I guess, is that not everyone fully understands the ongoing processes in Europe and not everyone understands Russia's aggressive behavior,” said Rinkēvičs.
He said: “Many need Russia to solve various other problems. [..] Yes, there is some stagnation in the military activity, but some stagnation has also entered the international field.”
For example, in relation to arms supplies to Ukraine, Rinkevics pointed out that there was a clear disappointment on the part of Ukraine: "A great deal of arms, ammunition, and equipment is being delivered to Ukraine, but in a war, there is too little of everything. The disappointment expressed in the speeches of the representatives of the Ukrainian Government is perfectly understandable. Latvia is doing everything to encourage allies to help them even more."
He acknowledged that “a certain routine” has also taken over the discussions at the European Union (EU) level, where for more than a month the sixth sanctions package has been discussed, which would probably include a Russian oil embargo.
“The EU has reached a consensus on the sixth sanctions package, with the exception of one country. [..] Simply blocking decisions, as Hungary does, is absolutely unacceptable. But there is no feeling that everyone has given up. Although we would like to help Ukraine more, we see that the arms flow continues, countries supply armaments, but this is simply not enough,” noted the Latvian Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Overall, most EU and NATO member states “stand very strongly” on the Ukrainian side and continue to support Ukraine, Rinkēvičs added.
