On Thursday, May 26, the Latvian Saeima held a trust vote on the new candidates for the posts of Interior Minister and Economics Minister, Kristaps Eklons and Ilze Indriksone (National Alliance).

General Kristaps Eklons, who was the deputy chief of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) until now, previously promised to continue the work of former Minister Marija Golubeva (Development/For!). In his opinion, greater attention should be paid to security issues and the development of overall internal security through the strengthening of civil protection.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš pointed to Eklon's 30-year experience in VUGD and the fact that he is a high-ranking professional in his field. His work will be necessary for Latvia to continue helping Ukrainian refugees and ensuring internal national security, said Kariņš.

Saeima approved Eklons' candidacy. 66 deputies voted for it, whereas 21 were against.

Candidate for the Economics Minister's post, Ilze Indriksone, pointed to the focus on economic issues due to the war in Ukraine and dealing with the inflation, as well as the availability of housing for families and strengthening the link between science and entrepreneurship so Latvia could provide internationally competitive products.

Indriksone's candidacy was voted for by 62 deputies, 24 were against, one abstained.
