S. Cihanouska: Baltkrievija ir kļuvusi par līdzagresoru

Tsikhanouskaya in Rīga: Belarusian fight for independence continues

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The state regime and the people of Belarus are two different things. It is necessary to continue to support the Belarusians who are opposed to the Alexander Lukashenko regime, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, leader of the democratic movement of Belarus, told Latvian Television on June 8.

Tsikhanouskaya is on a two-day visit to Latvia and meeting with various officials.

In an interview with LTV, Tsikhanouskaya stressed the importance of not forgetting that the Belarusian struggle for independence continues.

“After the war [in Ukraine] has started, the attitude towards Belarus has changed. Lukashenko has pulled our country into this war and made Belarus a co-aggressor. Our job, as Belarusians, is to explain and prove that the regime and the people of Belarus are two different things. There needs to be pressure on the regime but people need to be supported,” said Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

On Wednesday, Tsikhanouskaya met with Rīga Mayor Mārtiņš Staķis and with Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš. Politicians discussed the current situation in Ukraine. On Thursday, Tsikhanouskaya will address Saeima deputies and meet with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, and several other officials.
