Two more election candidates nixed

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The Central Election Commission (CVK) said September 1 it was removing the candidacies of two people who wanted to run in the Saeima elections on October 1.

The candidates, Mārtiņš Dribus and Eriks Urtans, were both candidates representing the "Tautas varas spēks" (People's power) party in the Kurzeme electoral district. Its election program says: "Let's throw out crooks, embezzlers of state funds, thieves and fools from the government and Saeima together!"

The reason for the removal of their candidates was covered by Article 5, Clause 3 of the Saeima Election Law which provides that candidates for the Saeima elections cannot be people convicted of intentional criminal offenses, except for persons who have been rehabilitated or whose convictions have been expunged or removed.

So far, three candidates have been removed from the 1,832 who originally applied from 19 different political forces. The previous candidate to be cancelled was guilty of the same error.
