Visegrad soldiers to be deployed in Baltic states

A political agreement has been reached for the countries of the Visegrad Group (Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary) to each sending a contingent of soldiers to the Baltics in three-month shifts beginning in 2017 within the framework of measures aimed at increasing NATO’s presence in the region, Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Prter Szijjarto told Hungarian news agency MTI after attending a summit of foreign ministers from the Visegrad Group (V4), Baltic and Scandinavian countries in Jurmala last week.

The minister also told the press that this would mean 150 soldiers at a time from each country, including Hungary, stationed in the Baltic region.

“This one-year military presence on the part of the V4 countries clearly indicates our solidarity with the countries of the Baltic,'' he emphasized, adding that the chiefs of staff of the countries involved would begin planning the details ahead of the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw.

Visegrad countries have already operated on rotation in the Baltic states as part of NATO's air policing mission based in Estonia and Lithuania.
