President Levits proposes changes in party spending

The President of Latvia, Egils Levits, has proposed that the party financing law include a provision for political forces to allocate at least 30% of the funding they receive from the State budget to the "content of their activities", the President's Chancellery said on April 3.

"After the 14th Saeima elections, some political parties found it difficult to find suitable candidates for the management of individual sectors. Similar difficulties were observed in the formation of Saeima committees. There is a strong link here with how much the party has invested in strengthening the skills of its members, candidates for Members, and research and analytical work,” Levits said in a statement to the media.

State budget funding is currently mainly used to cover the costs of advertising and salaries. The president, therefore, calls for political parties to use no less than 30% of the State budget spent in the year in order to ensure its content, namely, political parties' cooperation with different groups of Latvian society, seminars, congresses, conferences, research, polls, youth organization activities, as well as the training of parliamentary candidates.

The relevant amendments to the Law on Financing of Political Organizations drafted by the President have been sent for consideration by the Saeima.
