Saeima deems all candidates suitable for presidential post

On Monday, May 22, the Saeima Mandate, Ethics and Submissions Committee confirmed that all three candidates nominated for the office of President – Uldis Pīlēns, Edgars Rinkēvičs, and Elīna Pinto – comply with the requirements of the Constitution and the Law on the election of the President of Latvia and may apply for this post.

The Committee will prepare a report to the Saeima, which will be read from the opening of the Saeima session for the election of the President on May 31.

The candidates acknowledged that their own reputation was impeccable. All described the other competitors as strong and respectable in the presidential position.

The President of Latvia may be a citizen of Latvia who has reached the age of 40 on the election day and who has no other nationality. A person with limited capacity or who is punished for an intentional criminal offense, unless the person has been rehabilitated or the criminal record has been deleted or removed, cannot be elected as a president.

A citizen who has been an employee of the State of the USSR, Latvian SSR or foreign State security services, intelligence services, or counter-intelligence services, or pro-Soviet organizations after January 13, 1991, may not be elected as president.

In order to prepare this report, the commission had requested information regarding candidates from the General Prosecutor's Office, the State Revenue Service, the Ministry of the Interior Information Centre, the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs, the Corruption Prevention and Combating  Bureau, and the Constitution Protection Bureau.
