60 named in Independence Day honors list

The presidential chancellery announced the recipients of 60 state awards November 10 ahead of Lattvia's Independence Day on November 18.

The Order of the Three Stars will be awarded to 33 people, the Order of Viesturs to 11 people and the Cross of Recognition to 16 people.

According to the chancellery these highest state awards "are given to people who have performed their duties in a highly professional, selfless and courageous manner during the Covid-19 pandemic. People who have dedicated their work to the formation of the restored independent state of Latvia, strengthening of civic values, outstanding cultural and scientific workers. The awards are given to people who have promoted the unity of the Latvian diaspora and ties with Latvia for many years."

Among the better-known recipients of awards are Rīga-born dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov, film and theater director Viesturs Kairišs, animators Jānis Cimmermanis and Māris Putniņš, and writer and director Kristīne Želve. There's also an award for Japanese ambassador Yasuhiro Kawaguchi.
