Latvian President Egils Levits joined his counterparts from Estonia, Lithuania and Poland April 13 in making a visit to Kyiv to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Nothing was known about this visit until the last minute for security reasons. On Tuesday, Levits, together with his Baltic and Polish colleagues visited the Polish city of Rzeszow to discuss the possibilities of providing assistance to Ukraine. Officials then went to the railway station to go catch a train to Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has described the trip as an important gesture of support for Ukraine. Initially, officials visited the Kyiv suburb of Borodyanka to see with their own eyes the crimes committed during the occupation. They then discussed ways to further assist Ukraine's civilian and military forces, as well as the progress of war crimes investigations as evidence of numerous atrocities committed by the invading army has been recorded.

"President Egils Levits emphasized that Latvia would urge that the process of candidate status be reviewed by the European Union as soon as possible, so that Ukrainian society sees that its efforts to defend European values have not been in vain," said an account of the meeting from the Latvian Presidential Chancellery.

During the meeting, the President of Ukraine expressed hope that the Baltic States and Poland could help Ukraine by delivering grain exports via their ports. Levits confirmed that Latvia was fully prepared to co-operate with such a plan.
