Jansons says he'd tackle social problems on “new level” as president

Chief Ombudsman Juris Jansons if elected as president would focus on Latvia’s domestic processes, raising solving of social problems to a “new level”.

Jansons told LETA that he would focus on domestic processes – in relation to the society in general and protection of less protected residents, trying to reduce social inequality.

“The president can do it more efficiently. If decision-makers are addressed by the president, it has a completely different importance. The president has the right to set the agenda. The president also may hold politicians responsible for their progress,” said Jansons.

Jansons is confident that social inequality, poverty, lack of social security to a large extent is also a matter of the national security.

Jansons would use the opportunity to engage in the lawmaking processes. In his opinion, the president should promote adoption of good quality laws, therefore the president should submit legislative initiatives and assess the laws adopted by the parliament to prevent errors before the laws come into force.

Jansons said that as the president he would continue the activities launched as the ombudsman, but raising solving of these issues to a new level.

In relation to foreign policy, Jansons said that the president’s function is not to form foreign policy, therefore he would follow the general foreign policy vector, set on the national level and international organizations.

Jansons is not worried that he is supported by the opposition and might be supported by the leftist Harmony party. “The society and politicians have noticed that I am apolitical. I have always preserved neutrality,” he said.

As reported, the board of the Latvian Farmers’ Union, which is one of the partners in the Union of Greens and Farmers, has decided to nominate Ombudsman Juris Jansons for Latvia’s next president.

The Latvian Farmers’ Union has decided to nominate Jansons for president because he is a politically neutral, non-partisan candidate, who as an ombudsman, has done a lot to deal with numerous issues, Greens/Farmers chairman Armands Krauze said, also stressing Jansons’ competence.

Also, the coalition politicians today officially nominated Egils Levits, a judge at the European Court of Justice, for Latvian presidency.

The registration of presidential candidates starts May 9, and Levits is the first officially nominated candidate.
