Latvian president Levits tests Covid-positive

Returning from a working visit to Sweden Wednesday evening, President of Latvia Egils Levits carried out a Covid-19 antigen rapid test which was positive, the President's Chancellery said October 14.

The President carried out the PCR test later which also confirmed the infection. According to the Chancellery head Andris Teikmanis, the symptoms are minimal and the president is feeling well.

It was planned that the President of Latvia would be meeting the new President of Estonia, Alar Karis, at Rīga Castle today. According to the President's Chancellery, the Saeima Speaker Ināra Mūrniece will deputise and welcome the Estonian president instead, while Levits' meeting with Karis will be postponed.

The presidential chancellery later confirmed that the visit of the Romanian President scheduled to start on Friday had also been postponed.

President Levits was among the first in Latvia to complete a course of Covid-19 vaccination, using his own vaccination process to encourage others to do likewise. 

On October 13, President Levits attended the Malmö International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism and a roundtable meeting of the Raoul Wallenberg Insitute.
