Coronavirus is spreading more rapidly in Latgale than elsewhere because relatively fewer people have been vaccinated against Covid-19, especially the vaccination level is much lower among older people, the President of Latvia said. According to Levitts, the other Latvian municipalities and the country as a whole have to think about how to help Latgale municipalities.
He expressed hope that after the cancellation of the lockdown on November 15, a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers will take place in Latgale to meet the situation in Latgale and make special decisions regarding Latgale.
“Everyone in Latvia needs to help Latgale in this case,” the President of Latvia said.
Regarding further decisions by the government, Levits said he hoped that the government would keep the promise and cancel the lockdown on November 15, while maintaining strict limits for the unvaccinated and making life easier for those vaccinated. The president also expects the government to set clear criteria under which new restrictions could be introduced in the event of a repeat Covid-19 outbreak.
