May 5 saw Latvian President Egils Levits participating in the opening ceremony of the Polish-Lithuanian gas interconnection in Lithuania, emphasizing that the opening of the interconnection at the Jauniuna compressor station is an important moment not only for Lithuania and Poland, but also for the entire Baltic region and Finland.

"This is an historic event for Europe as a whole. In this way, we are helping to strengthen Europe's energy security. We are proving that we are a secure region of European growth, and we are securing our political and economic future and prosperity,” said the President.

“We are in favor of strengthening energy security and diversifying our energy sources so that Europe is more secure and independent of various events that are difficult to predict. As for Russia, I would not say that Russia is predictable. Russia is not reliable, and therefore we must get rid of Russia's influence," Levits said.

The Poland-Lithuania gas interconnector became operational on 1 May 2022. Its total length is 508km and it will also allow reverse flow of gas between the two states.

The official launch ceremony of Polish-Lithuanian gas interconnection also had the participation of President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, President of Poland Andrzej Duda, and EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson.
