It was also announced March 1 that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has been awarded  the Order of Viesturs.

Sarmīte Ēlerte, Chancellor of the Chapter of Orders which is in charge of presenting state awards, said: "The Order of Viesturs – the highest award of the Latvian state – was awarded to the President of Ukraine in honor of Volodymyr Zelensky's personal courage and leadership in defending Europe's common values."

The decision of the Chapter of Orders has been made in accordance with Section 21, Paragraph four of the State Awards Law.

The motto of the Order of Viesturs seems particularly appropriate: “Confortamini et pugnate” (Be Strong and Fight).

According to official information "The Order of Viesturs and its medal of honours can be bestowed to foreign military personnel for merits in educating national armed forces, maintaining public order, safeguarding state borders, and instilling the awareness of statehood."
