On September 1, the first day of the academic year, the President of Latvia Egils Levits wishes students to learn with joy and teachers to teach with joy.

The President, in an interview with Latvian Television, said that he wishes students to learn with joy because it is “very interesting and very nice.”

The information gathered by the Ministry of Education and Science (IZM) shows that 219,141 pupils will be learning in 568 educational establishments in Latvia. However, data on the number of students may be updated after September 5, when schools have entered the latest information in the National Education Information System (VIIS), according to LETA.

Provisional data show that 21,500 pupils will start learning in the first year.

As reported, the new school year will be difficult, since there is a pressing lack of teachers and study resources, as well as additional challenges with the uncertain pandemic situation and the integration of Ukrainian children into the education system.
