President Raimonds Vējonis, who underwent major heart surgery a month ago, is to leave hospital this weekend and continue his rehabilitation at the Vaivari rahabilitation center, the presidential press office announced Thursday.

"'State President Raimonds Vējonis' health has improved to the extent that treatment at Stradini hospital will no longer be necessary. It is expected that from this weekend his recovery will continue on the cardiac rehabilitation program at the Vaivari rehabilitation center," a statement said.

In a brief interview with LTV's Rīta Panorāma morning news show, Vējonis said the weeks of treatment had not been easy and that he craved the opportunity to take part in physical activity after spending so long in bed.

"Anyone who has been ill with a fever for example, is not happy. Listening to the doctors can be difficult, because we seem to feel that we are smarter," said Vējonis.

He repeated his thanks for the many get well messages he has received and  looked markedly better than he did a couple of weeks ago in his first public appearance since surgery.
