Saeima advances idea of freezing top officials' wages

On Thursday, October 10, the Saeima conceptually supported the amendments to the law proposed by the President of Latvia to temporarily freeze remuneration on the boards and councils of state and local government companies.

In the next two years - from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026 - the remuneration may not exceed the amount set on August 31 this year.

"Remuneration of the management of state and local government capital companies should be competitive but commensurate with the budgetary possibilities. At the same time, there should be transparent data and clear criteria for comparing remuneration in the public and private sectors," said Skaidrīte Ābrama (Progressives), Chair of the Committee on National Economy, Agrarian, Environmental and Regional Policy responsible for the draft law's progress in the Saeima.

The amendments need to be approved by the Saeima in a second - final - reading to enter into force. This will take place at the Saeima sitting on November 7.
