Initiative for referendum to dismiss Saeima falls flat

39,230 Latvian citizens have signed the petition for a referendum to dissolve the 14th Saeima in one year, which means that no referendum will be held, according to a statement on the website of the Central Election Commission (CVK).

In order for the collection of signatures to be considered successful and a referendum on the dissolution of the 14th Saeima to be held, at least 10% of the voting age population, or 154,241 Latvian citizens over the age of 18, had to sign the initiative. This time, 2.54% of those eligible to vote supported the initiative.

The applications to hold a referendum on the dissolution of the Saeima were submitted to the CVK by the political forces Latvia First, Power of People's Power, Sovereign Power, Pamats-LV, Servants of the People for Latvia, Association of New Latvians, For Stability!, New Harmony, National Union for Justice and the association "I Can for the People of Latvia". All the initiatives were united in a single signature collection.

The signature collection officially started on November 10, 2023, and continued for one year, ending on November 9, 2024.

Initially, the signature collection was very active, with the parties involved campaigning and mobilizing their supporters quite actively. Around 35,000 signatures were collected in the first month, but after that, the signature collection virtually stopped.

The initiative was signed on the "Latvija.gov.lv" portal or in person.
