Saeima to consider making Lāčplēsis Day holiday

The Saeima decided on Thursday, November 14, to refer to the responsible committee a proposal submitted by the opposition National Alliance (NA) to designate November 11 as a public holiday.

According to the NA deputies, this would allow society to more fully commemorate the historic and nationally significant events of 11 November 1919, when Bermondt's troops were defeated and victory was won.

As the NA pointed out, several countries already have official holidays and days off to commemorate the army, veterans, or freedom fighters, and Latvia should do the same.

The NA believes that such amendments would have a positive impact, promoting a sense of nationhood and social cohesion.

The draft law "Amendments to the Law on Public Holidays, Commemorations and Commemorative Days" has been referred to the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee.

A signature collection is also ongoing on the public initiative portal manabalss.lv to make Lāčplēsis Day a holiday.
